Early warning detection using Data Center Monitoring tools can pay for itself very quickly should an unfortunate incident occur in your computer room. Early warning detection is the best defense against environmental threats. The main threat is heat. Heat kills gear. Water can also be damaging. With a small investment, your hardware will be protected and your network will stay online. First evaluate where the threats might come from. Example, is the data center located on a ground floor? What is above on the 2nd floor, 3rd floor etc ? Locate where water lines are running, as well as where all water sources are including bathrooms and water heaters. You can then start to pin point where the threat of a leaking ceiling will occur and how that leak might affect your hardware. In addition, does facilities control the HVAC to the building? Do they ever turn the air off after hours? Surprisingly enough, this happens more often than you would think. So it is best to develop a mitigation plan along with invest in simple environmental monitoring devices should a mishap or catastrophe occur to avoid network down time and the chance of having to replace expensive computer hardware. A step up from monitoring the data center is remote controlling specific functions in the data center. Relays controls are built into the Data Center Monitoring appliances allowing remote control functionality. When a water leak is detected, you could have a remote control set up to turn the water off. In addition, monitoring power in your computer room can be an added benefit. If city power goes down, you will know and can respond accordingly. All monitoring appliances include the abitlity to record and report all activity in your computer room. A simple CSV file is generated and can be downloaded for archiving. For multiple monitoring appliances, software is available to control multiple devices from a centralized console.
